Major Improvements to its predecessor 23
Figure 1-4: A use for Auto ISO in Manual Exposure mode. I knew I wanted
th
to use a slow shutter speed (1/25 of a second) to show blur on the
rotating gingerbread house, and I also knew my lens was sharpest at f/5.6,
which I wanted to use. Having nailed down two variables like that, it’s
handy to have the camera make the ISO whatever it needs to be to make
the exposure right. Former Nikon shooters have been clamoring for this
feature for years.
1.1.6 MORE 'M'S IN MFNR
There’s a very nice low-light option called “Multi-Frame Noise Reduction”
which takes multiple frames, aligns them in-camera, and then merges them
together, averaging much of the random noise at high ISO. Previous Sony
cameras would average six images together. The A77 II now gives you
some control over noise reduction amount too, and if you have this set to
"normal" MFNR will shoot 12 images and merge them together. (Setting it
to "low" merges only four). A great feature just got greater!
