focus Area 161

500mm f/8 mirror lens (the only mirror lens with AF capability ever made), only
the center AF point is used.

           5.14.2 ZONE

           See Section 5.14.5 (two sections
           ahead).

           5.14.3 CENTER
            “Center” uses ONLY the center
focus area, ignoring all others. Like
spot metering, it’s useful in difficult
situations where the camera’s Figure 5-24: Here’s a situation where
automation just fails. An example the Center AF area is necessary: when
of such a situation appears in shooting an animal (face detection
Figure 5-24). doesn’t work on animals) behind bars.
Here it makes sense to use either
5.14.4 FLEXIBLE SPOT “Center” or “Flexible spot” to prevent
the bars from being focused on. (We
“Flexible Spot” lets YOU choose ended up adopting this kitty. He’s since
which of the 79 focus points to use clawed up the couch and the curtains.)
via the joystick (which you can
           change at any time).

Think that's a lot of options for focus points? There are more!

TIP: Remember, changing the focusing mode doesn’t affect the exposure mode.
If you want to use spot metering (which isn’t flexible), you should invoke that
with the AEL function (discussed in Section 5.21.2) first before focusing.
