Figure 5-26: When the ambient light is too low for the autofocus mechanism to
work properly, the built-in near-IR L.E.D.s in all accessory flashes can project a
contrast pattern onto your subject, thereby giving your camera’s autofocus
system the contrast it needs to focus quickly – even on featureless, blank walls.
Restrictive TIP: The AF Illuminator function will NOT work if the camera is set to
AF-C (continuous AF mode, Section 5.13), nor in a handful of Scene modes
(specifically Landscape, Night Scene, Pet, Fireworks, or Sports Action.
