Zoom 223
TIP: When you’re playing images back, and you look at the stats (f/stop, shutter
speed, ISO, etc.) or EXIF information, the camera shows you the optical zoom
value only.
TIP 2: This probably goes without saying, but none of these fancy digital zoom
functions are enabled when you’re shooting RAW or RAW+JPG.
To use this feature, first select the range of digital zoom you want via the
MENU 3 Zoom Settings feature, then do a MENU 6
Zoom and then move the joystick to the right to zoom in. If you have
Digital Zoom enabled you’ll see the zoom scale in the lower right-hand
corner showing the two zoom ranges, one marked “C” and the other with
“D”. (Figure 5-66.)
At this point it makes sense to do a test: How does Clear Image Zoom’s
upsampling feature compare to taking the same image with CIZ OFF, then
cropping and upsizing in Photoshop? I performed the test on the sample in
Figure 5-65 and the result can be seen in Figure 5-68. Sony’s marketing
department wasn’t overselling; it’s very hard to tell the difference.
Figure 5-66: The zoom function in use.
Clear Image Zoom takes you up to 2x;
whereas Digital Zoom takes you up to 4x.
The orange letter next to the magnifying
glass ('D' or 'C') tells you which mode is
being employed.
