What it Does Lets you assign “exposure compensation” function to either
the front or rear control dial
Recommended Setting (Personal preference)
With this parameter set to “Front Dial”, the front control dial performs the
exposure compensation function when you’re in shooting mode (that is, not
while you’re in playback or other parameter-adjustment mode). It’s
extremely handy and convenient to have a feature which is used so often to
be so close to the shutter release button.
But since Sony has placed the exposure compensation button so close to the
shutter release button on this camera, one could argue that the ability to
reassign the front control dial in this way is kind of redundant. Maybe so,
but I cut my teeth on shooting children and weddings (two fast-paced
environments where you had to make adjustments quickly), and so got used
to using any feature which made camera operation faster. Since I’m so
used to working this way, if my cameras allow me to reassign the front
control dial in this way, I use it.
You may well ask, “Yo! The front control dial usually is used for setting
exposure values, like shutter speeds and f/stops. That’s a pretty important
function. How can you change those parameters when the front dial has
been reassigned?” The answer is “Well, it’s not that complex. When you
reassign either one of the wheels, the other wheel works like this:”
