So let me start by saying “Turn this function On”, then let’s talk about how
to use the AF Range Control.
6.10.1 AF RANGE CONTROL
Have you ever used an extreme lens (like a long telephoto or a macro lens)
and get frustrated that the autofocus would “hunt” and go to one extreme or
another before finally (finally!) zeroing in on your subject? Or worse, try to
focus on a far-away athlete and the camera consistently chooses the guy
who walks in front of your camera instead? Normally this is a job for Spot
Focus (which can handle the job quickly and swiftly) but now Sony has
given you a new AF Range Control tool to handle the problem as well. It
takes a small amount of time to configure it but it can make life easier when
you’re shooting sports or nature.
Before you can use this function, you have to assign it to a button. For this
example, I’ll assign it to the “C” button via MENU 6 Custom
Key Settings C button AF Range Control.
So here’s how you use it:
1. First, autofocus on your subject.
2. Once focus has been achieved, press the AF Range button you just
assigned. A scale
appears at the bottom
of the frame, with the
instructions appearing
in the top left corner:
Turn the rear control
dial to adjust the near
distance limit, and turn
the front control dial to
adjust the far distance
limit.
3. A small white triangle Figure 6-12: The AF Range Control limiter in
appears above the use. The focus range scale on the bottom lets
bottom scale, you see the focusing range visually; whereas
indicating the distance the yellow rectangles confirm that the subject
of the last autofocus you want is within that range.
