operation. You will use this as a guide to help narrow the focusing
range in the next step.
4. Rotate the rear and front control dials to narrow the allowable focusing
zone around the white triangle. As you adjust the dials you’ll see the
orange “fill” contract in size, representing the narrowed focusing range.
5. As you adjust the range, you’ll also see some focusing points light up
in yellow; these represent what the camera WILL focus on with the
current settings.
6. Either press the AF Range button again or press the shutter release
button halfway. You’re now in AF Range Control mode, as witnessed
by the (now white) scale on the bottom of the frame. The focusing
points on top of a subject that is within the newly specified range turn
yellow, giving you an idea
if you had set the range
properly or not.
7. The reduced focusing
range will be remembered
until the camera is turned
off.
This feature will work with any
lens. In my opinion it would
have been most useful in movie
mode, but alas the camera
prevents it from being used in
that mode.
I have found it most useful
when the camera is on a tripod, Figure 6-13: A camera was mounted on a
a macro lens is attached, I’m tripod and connected to a cable release, with
shooting a flower in a forest, the photographer being in an adjacent room
and the wind is moving the to get this shot. Not wanting the camera’s
subject. Usually in situations macro lens to hunt, he knew roughly the
like these you want to limit range of where the hummingbird would be
focusing because the camera and configured the AF Range Control to limit
might get distracted by other autofocusing to just this range. A perfect
branches, but spot focusing shot! Photo courtesy David DeBar, who has
won’t work because your taken a gazillion great images like this.
