           subject  continues  to  move  within a  narrow  range.  This feature  can  help
           with that problem.
           The AF Range function is not available in MF mode (nor in Movie mode,
           as just mentioned).


           6.11     AF AREA AUTO CLEAR

           Menu Position  MENU      3  AF Area Auto Clear

           What it Does  Shortens the duration of the green AF point illumination

           Recommended Setting  Off


           Normally when you’re autofocusing the AF point will illuminate in green
           for as long as the camera thinks it found focus.  When this setting is ON,
           the AF point will illuminate in green only momentarily, leaving your Live
           View image free of extra clutter.
           I don’t mind seeing the extra information, and so I keep this setting Off but
           that is an unjustifiable personal preference.


           6.12     AF AREA POINTS


           Menu Position  MENU      3  AF Area Points
           What it Does  Switches between 79 and 61 AF points when AF Area = Wide

           Recommended Setting  Auto


           Talk about nuanced behavior!  If you ever say to yourself, “The Wide AF
           area is just too wide!”, then this feature will remove all the AF points from
           the  perimeter  of  the  Wide  Area  AF  area.    Figure  6-14  shows  you  the
           difference.

           The only caveat about turning this feature on is that when you’re tracking a
           subject using Lock-On AF (or Center Lock-On AF, both of which work the
